Course Overview
The DDS programme was first approved by the Department of Higher Education in the Ministry of Education in March 1997. The Faculty took its first batch of 24 students in the 1997/1998 academic session followed by an intake of 48 students for the next three academic sessions. The number of intake was increased to 96 in the academic year of 2001/2002 and 2002/2003 before it was reduced to 65 students. From 2009, the intake was further reduced to 55. To date, the Faculty has produced 12 batches of dental graduates with a total number of 655 graduates.
The DDS programme has undergone the process of accreditation by The Malaysian Dental Council (MDC) appointed by The National Accreditation Body (Lembaga Akreditasi Negara, LAN) for recognition of the degree. The last 2012 visit to the faculty has resulted in the accreditation of the programme for a period of 5 years.
The five-year DDS programme is divided into two phases in which both academic and practical elements of Dentistry are studied and practiced. The curriculum is designed to incorporate competency-based learning principles. The basic medical science subjects are conducted by the Medical and Allied Health Science faculties, with an emphasis on the interaction of dental and medical problems.
